UNIVERSITY PARK WORLD PEACE ROSE GARDEN MISSION STATEMENT:
To advance peace and understanding amongst all the nations, cultures and religions of the world through the creation of rose gardens that become magnets for community activities.
ABOUT THE GARDEN
In 2014 Grupe Commercial Company partnered with International World Peace Rose Gardens to bring a rose garden to University Park, located in the Historic Magnolia District of Stockton, California. Our local garden is one of a series of nine gardens planted in some of the most cultural, historical and sacred grounds throughout the world. The Peace Plaza in the center of the garden is surrounded by rays and planets of flowers. Over 250 rose bushes were specially curated for this growing zone, brilliant color, perfumed fragrance and inclusive names. Visitors will be greeted by roses graced with names such as; Peace, Lincoln, Marilyn Monroe, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Honor, Coretta Scott King, Julia Child and Firefighter. Guests can linger at a bench with views towards a kaleidoscope of colorful roses, shady oak trees, a pond with paddling ducks, turtles and cooling fountain. Wintertime in the garden remains a beautiful experience as one can view rose hips, pruning stages and new growth while still enjoying the surrounding views.
MESSAGES OF PEACE
In partnership with students all over the globe, thousands of students from Stockton schools participate in the Messages of Peace Contest. Messages are judged locally and winning messages are placed on plaques throughout the garden and unveiled by students at our annual spring Celebration. Students have the opportunity to participate in the contest year after year, allowing them to develop their own personal peace platform and build a peace community within their classroom. The Messages Of Peace are poignant and unscripted thoughts revealing the thoughts and dreams of this next generation. Visitors will be moved and motivated to think about peace in their life and their opportunity to help be an Architect Of Change for Peace.
PEACE BOX
Responding to our visitor’s individual stories surrounding their visit to the Rose Garden, a Peace Box, painted by our resident artist Erin Elizabeth, was added to the garden entry. Guests are encouraged to write their own Message Of Peace, or reason to visit the garden and leave it in the Peace Box. Messages are collected weekly and frequently shared on our social media in an effort to continue the Peace Conversation with our community members.
SISTER GARDEN
The University Park World Peace Rose Garden is honored to be the sister affiliated garden to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have A Dream” International World Peace Rose Garden. Together we share the theme of “Peace Through Non Violence”. We are thrilled to collaborate with this historic State Park and share Messages of Peace between our students. Our county has responded generously and in 2018 raised funds to send the winning student, Emma, and her parents to Atlanta to unveil her plaque along side hundreds of students from around the world, further expanding our reach for peace, nationally and globally.
STOCKTON POLICE DEPARTMENT AMBASSADORS GARDEN
In 2015, there was an effort underway to give the Stockton Police Department a facelift. With the support of International World Peace Rose Gardens, Grupe Commercial Company approached the SPD and Leadership Stockton about adding a small Ambassadors Rose Garden to the front of the Police Department. The intention was to create a rose garden to bring beauty to the facility, hope to our Peace Officers and welcome to all who visit the department. With great fanfare we opened our garden later that summer. The SPD participates in the Messages of Peace Contest and selects a winning message each year that is placed in their garden. The SPD has been active in the annual Celebrations, serving as keynote speakers and their entire mounted equine unit greeted students in 2018, further building bridges between our young people and Peace Officers.
QUALITIES OF PEACE ROSE PAINTINGS
Erin Elizabeth set out on the ambitious goal to create 60 unique rose paintings based on the 60 Qualities of Peace as developed by International World Peace Rose Gardens. The 60 Qualities of Peace are used to inspire positive behaviors and beliefs leading people towards peace. Qualities such as: Love, Respect, Kindness, Integrity, Non Violence, Optimism and Integrity are included. Each painting developed from the center of the rose outward. Gorgeous treasures are hanging in both business and private homes, Erin has broadened her reach into the community by teaching rose painting classes and Art Alchemy classes. Erin completed her collection in fall of 2018. 20% of proceeds have been generously donated back to University Park World Peace Rose Garden. If you’re interested in seeing more Erin’s work click here
